Enemies Discovered on Solstice Night; Retreat to Katoteros

Last Christmas

Enemies Discovered on Solstice Night; Retreat to Katoteros marks the moment a hidden threat turns Caleb (Malphas) and Lilliana’s home into an unsafe refuge. The solstice has thinned the veil between worlds, allowing hostile beings to cross over with greater power than usual. When Caleb realizes that the danger is not an illusion but an enemy within the gathering, Myone’s answer is immediate: he and Lilliana must leave for Katoteros, even though departure means abandoning the cottage they love.

Discovery on the Solstice

At first, Caleb sees nothing where he thought he saw something and tries to dismiss the sight as a mistake. The timing prevents him from trusting that explanation. On any other night he might believe his eyes had deceived him; this is the solstice, when the veil is thin and beings can cross into the world more powerfully than they normally could. His uncertainty becomes alarm, and he searches the darkness, calling out in an effort to locate what he saw.

The answer comes as a voice in the wind, repeating his call in a mocking form. Caleb turns toward the sound, but the people around him are humans celebrating, not an identifiable attacker. When he asks where the voice is, it answers from beside his ear that its speakers are everywhere. The enemy remains unseen, but its proximity and apparent reach make the threat more immediate than a distant sighting: Caleb cannot point to a single place from which it is approaching.

The Threat Reaches the People He Loves

Caleb’s response shifts from searching the darkness to checking on Lilliana. He pulls his wife against his chest and gives thanks that she is safe and that the shadow did not go near her. Relief is so powerful that he cannot answer her at first; when he manages to speak, he tells her he saw something from Mavromino. His fear is not only that an enemy has appeared, but that it might reach the person beside him.

He recruits Myone and Xevikan to search the gathering. Myone calls for Xevikan, who appears beside her at once; Caleb tells them that an enemy is among them and asks for help finding it. Xevikan inclines his head and vanishes to search. The exchange converts Caleb’s private sighting into a shared security emergency, although the enemy’s location remains unknown.

Myone’s response also makes clear that the danger is personal. She says that the enemy knows how to break Caleb, a judgment he recognizes rather than disputes. The gathering therefore exposes a vulnerability beyond physical proximity: the enemy can threaten him through the people whose safety matters to him. When Myone says that she must secure both him and Lilliana, Caleb initially laughs at the proposal to take them to Katoteros, then realizes she is serious.

The Decision to Leave

Myone identifies Katoteros as the realm where their kind lives and the place where Lilliana can be protected. Caleb objects to being taken there, but his proposed alternative—having his body parts removed and fed to him—is a bitter joke, not a workable plan. Lilliana, hearing the exchange, asks what Katoteros is and then reacts to what the move would cost: leaving her home.

Myone insists that neither of them can stay. The enemies will come for both of them, making departure a necessity rather than a preference. Caleb draws Lilliana close and reassures her that the danger would eventually have found him regardless. His words acknowledge that the threat has not been caused simply by their present location, even as the discovery makes remaining there untenable. Katoteros is presented as the available refuge, not as a place Lilliana has chosen for herself.

Home, Separation, and the Promise of Return

Lilliana accepts the decision without pretending that it is painless. With a ragged breath, she says she will miss their cottage, but that being with Caleb makes the loss bearable. Her response preserves the distinction between leaving willingly and accepting what circumstances demand: she loves the home and will miss it, yet her attachment to Caleb gives her a reason to face the move.

Caleb is grateful that she is being reasonable, while also recognizing how much the departure asks of her. He knows she loves the home and says that he hates taking her away from it. In response, he promises that they will return; Lilliana smiles and makes clear that she will hold him to that promise. The scene ends with a commitment rather than a completed journey. It establishes their intention to leave for safety, but does not show them reaching Katoteros or returning to the cottage.

Narrative Significance

The episode turns the solstice’s thinning veil from a supernatural condition into an immediate practical danger. The unseen enemy’s voice makes the threat feel both everywhere and nowhere: Caleb can hear it close by, yet the celebrating humans around him offer no visible target. The contrast between public celebration and concealed danger forces the characters to recognize that ordinary surroundings no longer guarantee safety.

The resulting retreat is also a relationship test. Myone frames protection as urgent, but the proposed solution requires Lilliana to leave a beloved home and Caleb to accept that his enemies can use his attachments against him. Their decision does not erase that cost. Instead, Lilliana’s acceptance and Caleb’s promise give the forced departure a personal measure: safety requires separation from home, while the promise of return keeps that loss from becoming, at this point in the story, a final farewell.
